The city of Cuenca, Ecuador offers many wonderful restaurants and, despite what is said in some guidebooks, a number of good bars and pubs.
Los Capulíes – a good restaurant for traditional Ecuadorian cuisine and a great low-key bar. Reservations are a must on weekends. Located just down from the corner of Cordova and Borrero, Tel: 832339.
El Jardín – very expensive but worth it. The restaurant has great food and an elegant atmosphere. Located on Cordova near Los Capulíes. It’s closed on Sundays and Mondays.
La Rotond – excellent French cooking and a good view of the river. Located on 12 de Abril and Jose Peralta, Tel: 888111.
NY Pizza – great Italian food, especially their calzones, and moderately priced. Located at Gran Colombia 10-43 and Padre Aguirre.
El Túnel – reasonably priced, good service, and atmosphere. It’s especially popular for lunch, which is cheap. Located at Gral Torres 8-60, Tel: 823109.
Casa Grande – good food and value in the picturesque San Joaquín neighborhood. Located on San Joaquín, Tel: 939992.
Cafecito – excellent and cheap food (including good vegetarian dishes), charming patio, and a nice atmosphere. Recommended. Located at Honorato Vásquez 7-36 and Luis Cordero, Tel: 832337.
Cafe Austria – amazing cappuchino, latte, and coffee, great pies, cakes, and other desserts, and inexpensive sandwiches. Located at Benigno Malo 5-99.
Cafe Chordeleg – open 24 hours and serves the best breakfast in town. Located at Gran Colombia 7-87.

Picadilly Pub – upscale, clean, and relaxed. Located at Borrero 7-46 and Pres. Cordova.
Los Capulíes – a great low-key bar. Fine wines and liquors available. Located just down from the corner of Cordova and Borrero.
Tapas y Canciones – quaint, a good place to sip wine and talk. Located Remigio Crespo and Galapagos.
Chaos – popular with Cuencaños. Located on Honorato Vásquez and Hermano Miguel.
Zoom – popular disco, plays international music, frequented more by local youth than travelers. Located on Calle Larga and Mariano Cueva.
IV y 20 – international and Latin music, small, popular with Cuencaños and travelers. Located at 12 de Abril and Galapagos. This area can be dangerous at night so it’s better to take a taxi.
La Mesa Salsoteca – Latin music, very popular among travelers and locals. Located at Gran Colombia 3-36 between Vargas Machuca and Tomás Ordóñez (no sign).
